Local volunteers help build affordable housing in their communities

 

White Sulphur Springs, WV May 10th 2014– More than 13,000 volunteers are expected to partner with 300 Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the country to help build affordable housing in their local communities in recognition of National Women Build Week, May 3-11. Now in its seventh year, National Women Build Week challenges women to devote at least one day to the effort to eliminate poverty housing.

 

In White Sulphur Springs, on May 10th over 30 volunteers, including Amber McHale and Lowe’s Heroes employee volunteers will be working hard to show their support in eliminating substandard housing and making simple, decent, affordable, shelter a matter of conscience and action. Longtime event partner Lowe’s will also offer in-store how-to clinics where volunteers can learn construction skills in preparation for the build event.

 

WHAT:           30 to 40 volunteers build interior walls for home planned for the Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity Tuckahoe Road Town Home development in recognition of National Women Build Week

WHY:             Habitat’s National Women Build programrecruits, educates and inspires women to build and advocate for simple, decent and affordable homes in their communities. With a contribution of $1.75 million to National Women Build Week, Lowe’s will provide a $5,000 gift card to more than 300 participating affiliates.

The mission of Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate substandard and poverty housing and to make safe, decent, affordable housing a matter of conscience and action. To help meet that mission, Almost Heaven HFH employs four full-time and six part-time staff members. In our 20 year history, we have constructed 86 new single-family detached houses, and have performed over 300 repairs to the existing housing stock in our community. Almost Heaven HFH constructs houses for homeownership. In addition to our housing ministry of construction and repair, we also provide one-on-one and group counseling to our partner families and members of the general community. We provide financial, budget and credit counseling, homebuyer education and life skills classes.
